How Much Does It Cost To Take A DSST Exam?
Updated: Sep 1

DSST exams are a great way to get college credit without taking a course.
But how much do they cost?
And is the extra expense worth it?
We'll look at the cost of DSSTs and help you decide if they're the right choice for you.
Currently, the test fee for each DSST exam is $100.00, payable by credit card only.
This fee is non-refundable.
Also, you'll likely receive a proctor fee when you arrive at your authorized testing center.
Active Duty Military
DANTES covers one attempt per title for active-duty military members for eligible examinees.
You're responsible for the retake fee on your second attempt if you don't pass the first time.
So it's essential to pass on your first attempt, or the cost of taking a DSST could start to add up!
So, is the extra expense worth it?
Yes!
Absolutely!
DANTES covers the first attempt, so there's no risk in giving it a shot.
Civilians
Compare the cost of taking the DSST to the cost of taking the course.
Some universities charge as much as $1,000 - $2,500 for online classes.
So, of course, the DSST exam fees start to look like a bargain when you compare them to the cost of taking an entire 6-8 week class!

DSST PROCTOR FEE
The proctor fee varies by institution, so it's best to confirm with your DSST test center. Expect to pay anywhere between $20 - $80.
Please call your test center ahead of time to avoid any issues.
If the DSST is more affordable and will help you graduate on time, it's worth giving it a shot!
But if the DSST is more expensive or won't fit into your degree plan, you should stick with traditional courses.
Whatever you decide, we wish you the best of luck!
